Interested in picking up volleyball as your go-to sport this summer? Want to spend some quality time with your friends playing sports? You should know that playing indoor volleyball (the traditional “volleyball”, as we refer to it) and beach volleyball aren’t the same.
For one, the surface you’ll play on is different, meaning that your footwear, the choice of the ball, as well as the court, and rules change along with it. Let’s take a look at what makes beach volleyball different from its indoor counterpart so that you can make the most of it this summer season!
1. Footwear
Let’s start with the basics – footwear. When playing beach volleyball, you’ll more often than not be barefoot. This is because the sandy surface you’ll play on is much easier to move around in when wearing no footwear.
This will give you solid footing and help you focus on your hand-eye coordination. Contrary to that, indoor volleyball is played on solid surfaces and requires dedicated sports shoes which will help you sprint on the court without exertion.
2. Ball Size
While it may seem obvious at first glance, using traditional indoor volleyball to play beach volleyball will only end in you and your friends hurting yourselves. Beach volleyball requires a larger, softer ball for it to work as intended.
It’s also why beach volleyball is a great sport for kids who will love tossing an oversized ball around the sand. In indoor conditions, volleyball requires a smaller, leather-made ball for the game to flow without slowdown.
3. Player Count
Even though you don’t have to worry too much about player counts when playing with friends, it’s still worth noting that there are differences to be found here. Beach volleyball is usually played with only two players on each side so that everyone can move around the proverbial court more easily.
Indoor volleyball is played with six-person teams where each player will be in charge of a different segment of the court. This makes indoor volleyball more strategic and less sporadic compared to its beach counterpart.
4. Scoring System
Again, when playing with street rules, scoring can be done in any way you choose to do it with your friends. But, indoor volleyball does feature strict rules when it comes to scoring, consisting of five sets, each ending when either team reaches 25 points.
Once a team wins three sets, the game is over, with two wins per team leading to a tiebreaker. In beach volleyball, three sets end in a best-of-three system, with 21 points per set. This is not only because playing on the sand, in heat, is more exerting, but also because beach volleyball is often played casually.
5. Court Size
Because indoor volleyball is played in so many official tournaments and championships around the world, and also because it features a larger team setup, its court size is 18x9m. Beach volleyball on the other hand stands at 16x8m because of the sandy surface you’ll play on.
Having less space to maneuver and a larger ball to manage makes beach volleyball much more fun and exciting for street-style play. A small court also makes for more hectic games, especially when the third set starts and everyone wants to come out on top.
6. Weather Conditions
Playing beach volleyball means that your game might not often go as you planned it to. You might have to deal with heavy wind, occasional rain, or high temperatures which will affect your stamina and focus. When playing indoors, these elements are a non-issue, so it comes down to personal preference whether you’d like to play outdoors or inside.
However, there is a charm to playing beach volleyball that cannot be replicated when compared to indoor volleyball which comes off as more tightly controlled. If you don’t mind the occasional gust of wind disrupting your serve, beach volleyball is a much more fun option to choose.
Making the Most Out of Volleyball
Whether you choose to play volleyball with a group of friends or decide to join a local club, the most important part is that you have fun doing so. Volleyball is an amazing sport for its teamwork, as well as the physical exercise it’ll put you through every time you play.
Pick the right ball, gather your friends, and start playing volleyball today. You’ll quickly spot the differences between the two systems on your own and be able to pick the one that fits your sensibilities the most. Playing with street rules will also make it easier for you and your friends to simply enjoy playing volleyball regardless of what any official rulebook might say on the matter.
