Streetball is a game where choosing the right tactic can be the key to victory. There are many approaches to playing, but we’ve highlighted three strategies that can help any player showcase their best skills.

1. Tactics for "big" players

If you play in position No. 4, the "power forward," your task is to use your physical attributes to dominate on the court. Keep your opponent at a distance, preventing them from making quick drives to the basket. If your size is an advantage, attack forcefully, pushing your opponent closer to the hoop. When facing an evenly matched opponent, exploit their positional mistakes by making quick cuts to their pivot foot, heading toward the basket.
In defense, the main rule is personal coverage. Against a "small" player, block their attacking zones, stopping them from gaining speed. If facing a "big" player, be more aggressive, maintaining face-to-face positioning so they can’t shield the ball with their body.

2. Tactics for "small" players

When playing as a No. 3, the "small forward," your focus is on speed and agility. Drive to the basket with bursts of speed, and if your opponent is larger with longer reach, lead them to the edge of the court. From there, you can shoot from the line for a three-pointer or position yourself for a rebound in case of a miss.
In defense, your main asset is quickness. Against a larger opponent, use your agility to force errors. This will create extra pressure. When playing against an evenly matched opponent, unsettle them with rapid movements, creating opportunities to drive to the basket.

3. Playing under the basket

When the game moves under the basket, it’s essential to be as creative as possible. Use unconventional moves to disorient your opponent and take control of the game.
For "big" players, it’s useful to play with your back to the opponent, maintaining distance and scoring with two-handed overhead or underhand shots. This reduces the chances of your opponent making a block. "Small" players should focus on creating maximum separation and using feints to confuse defenders and finish effectively.

Futsal offers a vast array of tactics and tricks, but today, we’ll focus on our top five, which are simple yet effective moves in futsal.

Move 1 - "Pivot"

Application: Offense.

Many futsal teams, including the Russian national team, rely on the "pivot" tactic. Here, a player skilled at shielding the ball with their body takes position near the opponent’s penalty area, waiting for a pass. Upon receiving the ball, they shield it, creating two options: a) pass to a teammate for a shot or b) turn and attempt a shot themselves. This makes it challenging to predict the pivot's next move, especially if they’re proficient with both feet and can move left or right.
Often, two defenders are needed to cover the pivot: one to guard the left and the other the right side. The furthest player, considered less of a threat, is left open. The effectiveness of this tactic lies in its unpredictability, simplicity, and speed in execution.

Move 2 - "Screen"

Application: Versatile.

The screen is a common move in futsal, utilized in open play and set pieces. Typically, a player uses a screen to open a shooting lane for a teammate. For instance, an attacking player shifts from the left wing to the center for a shot, while a teammate screens their defender. In set pieces (free kicks, corners, and even throw-ins), the screen can be equally effective.

Move 3 - "Fifth Outfield Player"

Application: Mostly during endgame scenarios when trailing.

The fifth outfield player is typically introduced towards the end of a match by the team that’s behind in score. Sometimes, the opposing team also plays five outfielders to relieve pressure, calm the game, and push the opponent back, thus wasting time. The idea is simple: to create a numerical advantage. In this setup, the goalkeeper (acting as the fifth outfielder) often positions themselves close to the opponent's goal.

Move 4 - "Double Wall"

Application: During an opponent's free kick.

In futsal, forming a wall with multiple players is less effective due to the small court size, as it can grant the opposition a numerical advantage. This is where the double wall becomes useful. Initially, the goalkeeper sets up two defenders in a wall, but one defender then moves parallel to their goal. This keeps the wall’s area intact, and the shifting player can block the opponent closer to the post if there’s a pass involved.

Move 5 - "Quick Advantage"

Application: Under opponent pressure in your own half.

This technique helps achieve two goals – escape pressing on your half and transition into an attack with a numerical edge. As you may know, substitutions in futsal have no limits and happen in a designated 5-meter zone. Here’s the trick: a player can exit on one side of the substitution zone while their replacement enters on the opposite side, strategically cutting off an opponent.
This move works well when the goalkeeper has the ball, and defenders are tightly marked, as the keeper can throw the ball accurately. Some teams have also managed to pull off this move in open play effectively.

Tennis is a sport that is easy to start but endlessly challenging to master. One of the game's intricacies is the variety of shots that can surprise and unsettle opponents. A diverse shot selection is crucial for effective tennis play.

Repertoire of Shots

As a general principle, use the eastern forehand grip for serves, overhead smashes, and forehand groundstrokes. For volleys (where you strike the ball before it bounces), employ the forehand or backhand grip, depending on the volley's direction.

Forehand

The eastern forehand is the most common grip in tennis and the one you'll use for your forehand drive and most of your shots. It's often called the “shake hands” grip because you hold the racket as if you're shaking hands with it. To ensure the correct grip, lay your hand flat on the racket strings, then slide your hand down to the handle. Wrap your fingers around the racket, keeping them relaxed. Your index finger should be slightly forward, as if you're pulling a trigger.
For hard courts, players often use the western grip, which is well-suited for handling high-bouncing balls. To adopt this grip, rotate your thumb clockwise onto the top of the handle, which moves your palm underneath, making waist-high shots easier to manage.

Backhand

To prepare for a backhand shot, start with the eastern forehand grip, then rotate your hand counterclockwise around the handle, tucking your thumb underneath and positioning your palm more on top. Wrapping your thumb around the handle in this way provides a firmer grip, but ensure your fingers aren’t too close together.
Many players prefer a two-handed backhand for added strength. Simply keep the same grip and place your second hand next to the first for support.

Slice Backhand

Among all the tennis shots, the slice backhand is one of the most versatile. It's a shot that’s hard to predict and execute but can be placed with precision and can be very difficult to return. The slice backhand is most effective when returning a high ball aimed at your backhand side. Here's how to perform it:

 - Start by raising the racket above the ball on your backswing, letting the racket face open at a 45-degree angle. Turn your shoulders as you swing back. When you swing through the ball, move swiftly and smoothly, brushing downward to create underspin. The exact swing path depends on the height of the incoming ball. Your follow-through should naturally extend from the swing and finish lower than a typical backhand.

 - A well-executed slice backhand sends the ball on a flat or downward path, causing it to skid after bouncing and stay low, making it harder for opponents to return.

One more advantage of the slice backhand is its similarity to the backhand lob. With just a slight adjustment in your swing and a flick of your wrist, you can turn a slice into a lob, catching your opponent off guard. This trick works best once you've already shown that you can hit a solid slice shot.

Volleyball stands out as a unique sport primarily because players are required to rebound the ball, unlike other major sports where players can hold or pause with the ball during play. In football, for example, if a player drops the ball, others scramble across the field, trying to secure it. In basketball, when a player is unsure or the play falters, they can simply hold onto the ball and regroup before passing it. Imagine if a volleyball hitter facing a massive block could say, “That’s too big!” and then pass the ball back to their team for a redo with as many hits as needed. But in volleyball, players must “better the ball,” making the next play superior to the last, without complaint. By the third hit, no matter the circumstances, the ball must clear the net and land in the opponent’s court. There’s no room for a second attempt.

Almost all other sports involving rebounds provide players with tools to help control the ball. For example, my mom's new tennis racket has a much larger head than her old one, and she’s been playing better because of it. But in volleyball, you can’t buy improved arms for passing or enhanced hands for setting. Want to block better? Unfortunately, you can’t purchase “extended” arms for that either. The only way to improve is to dedicate time to the game and gain experience through repetition.

Another unique aspect of volleyball is that at lower levels, less-skilled teams often win! Yes, at this stage, the worst team can come out on top. While beginners should focus on three touches per side as they develop, teams that only aim to get the ball back over the net quickly can win on the scoreboard. Patience, then, is key.

Volleyball’s court is the largest in the world once the ball is in play. After the serve, the boundaries extend far beyond the actual court lines, restricted only by walls or other obstacles. Most sports keep players confined within specific areas, but volleyball players must chase down errant balls, covering substantial ground to keep the play alive, all while adapting to varying conditions such as low ceilings or harsh lighting. Volleyball players are often the ones to find hidden badminton birdies or lost balloons in gym ceilings.

One critical feature of the game is the net, which players can never touch while the ball is in play. And to ensure this, not one but two referees keep a close eye on the net, monitoring every movement. On this smaller-than-average court, volleyball also features a high player density, making it one of the most crowded team sports. With 12 players squeezed into a 162-square-meter space, things get tight. You have to get along with your teammates. Imagine if volleyball had fouls: after a strong block, a frustrated player might lash out, causing a penalty. Thankfully, that’s not part of the game!
Volleyball can be played on virtually any surface: sand, grass, asphalt, wood, or even mud or snow. However, no matter the surface, the ball is never allowed to touch the ground, which is legal in most other sports. For a humorous perspective on this, try watching a game upside down; you’ll see how the ball constantly fights gravity, racing toward the floor.

The range of a player’s contacts varies from just off the ground to the peak of their jump. The ball’s trajectory can go as high as the playing area allows, and players must be prepared to dig a ball one second and then jump as high as possible the next. The ball's speed varies drastically, too, ranging from slow to over 100 kilometers per hour in international play. Despite these challenges, volleyball players typically wear minimal protective gear, often just kneepads. And let’s be honest—how often do those kneepads even get hit?

A unique requirement of volleyball is the consecutive maximum efforts needed to be a good spiker. Players must jump as high as possible and, while in the air, hit the ball as hard as they can. Imagine a pro baseball or softball player needing to jump before swinging at the ball. This is the expectation for every third hit in volleyball.

Receiving serves is another major challenge, comparable to baseball or softball. In baseball, a batter who hits .300 is considered successful. But in volleyball, if a player misses two-thirds of the serves, they wouldn’t make the team. On top of that, players don’t get the luxury of calling balls and strikes. Even if the ball grazes the net, it’s still in play, and players are expected to make the perfect pass to the setter.

Beginners and experienced players alike often return the ball in less-than-ideal forms, given the limitation of only three contacts. Every touch is scrutinized by referees, making ball control paramount. Imagine basketball players needing to shoot from wherever they are on the court after the second pass—this is what volleyball demands.
The game also requires a wide variety of skills, regardless of the player’s position. Volleyball players rotate to new positions after each change in possession, forcing them to adapt and play from different spots on the court. Imagine if, after a touchdown, the quarterback switched to tight end, or in baseball, the pitcher rotated to catcher after an out. Volleyball players must be well-rounded, able to perform effectively all over the court.

Despite the constant action, players receive little positive feedback. Only aces and spiking kills are considered rewards. Defensive success, on the other hand, often goes unnoticed. Blockers can do a great job without ever touching the ball by directing it to their teammates or causing opponents to make errors. Coaches play a vital role here, offering feedback and encouragement.
Volleyball has no time limit, and you can’t win by just one point—you must win by at least two. Other sports allow coaches to bring in lesser-skilled players when the clock winds down and the game is virtually won. But in volleyball, even a lead of 20 points can disappear if players lose focus. At the most recent Olympics, one of the top 12 players on the U.S. team played only one point during the entire competition, just to officially earn the title of “Olympian.”

In volleyball, the process of learning the fundamentals is complicated further by the rotation. Smaller team sizes, such as two-, three-, or four-person teams, reduce the number of positions to learn and increase opportunities to touch the ball. That’s how you learn—not by watching, but by playing. The rapid switching between offense and defense often happens in less than a second, sometimes multiple times within the same rally.

Lastly, every play starts with the same skill: serving. Regardless of what happens during a rally, the point begins with the serve. And unlike most other sports, a point is scored nearly every time the ball is in play. Yet, volleyball differs from sports where a lead of one point can secure victory. In volleyball, you must always win by two.
The complexity of volleyball makes it a unique and challenging sport. Beginners quickly realize that the ball never comes to them perfectly, even during teammate-to-teammate play. Reading and anticipation are the most critical skills, more important than the six core volleyball techniques. Ninety-nine percent of the game is spent moving into better positions rather than actually touching the ball.

It’s a sport that constantly challenges both the body and the mind.

Serving

Begin by positioning yourself just behind the baseline, with your body turned sideways toward the court. Place one foot in front of the other, ensuring your weight is primarily on your back foot. Hold the ball against the racquet strings with your tossing hand. Point your left foot toward the right-hand net post. Your left hand, holding the ball, should raise it upright to release above your head—about 18 inches above your normal reach. Avoid releasing the ball prematurely, as this can cause it to fly at an angle, forcing you to lean forward. Ideally, the ball should land about a foot in front of your left foot.

Raise your racquet behind your head. As the ball rises, bring your racket back and upward in preparation to hit it. You should aim to strike the ball at full stretch, with your racket arm fully extended at its highest point. At this moment, shift your body weight from your back foot to your front foot to add power to your shot. Begin to transfer your weight forward, pushing your hips into the court. Let the speed of the racquet head surpass your wrist as you make contact with the ball. Use your non-dominant arm for balance as your body rotates.

Ensure that you strike the ball with an "up and over" motion, as though you were throwing the racquet at the ball. After contact, follow through with your swing, allowing the racquet to wrap around your waist. Keep your eye on the ball and observe where your opponent returns it.

Once the serve is made, the game continues with various shots. The most frequent shot you'll use is the groundstroke, which is played after the ball bounces once. Groundstrokes are categorized into forehands (hit with the palm facing the ball) and backhands (hit with the back of the hand facing the ball).

Success with these shots largely depends on your grip. There are distinct grips for forehand and backhand shots in tennis, making it essential to master each to execute the shots effectively.

"Float like a butterfly ... sting like a bee." Muhammad Ali's famous saying may not be about tennis, but its wisdom is highly applicable to the sport. Effective footwork is the foundation upon which all other tennis skills are built. Without it, even the most refined strokes are rendered useless.

The Science of Footwork

Understanding and practicing the science of footwork is essential for any aspiring tennis player. Here are five key tips to enhance your footwork and elevate your game:

 

1. Balanced Contact: Hitting a tennis ball can be likened to hitting a golf ball; balance is crucial. Mis-hitting the ball often occurs because you're not comfortably set at the point of contact. Your skills improve significantly when you make contact while balanced, flat-footed, with a slightly bent front knee, and your head steady. Proper footwork is what gets you to this balanced position.
2. Bounce Step: In between shots, avoid standing flat-footed. Top players use the bounce step to stay poised and ready to react. This involves flexing your knees slightly, getting on the balls of your feet, and bouncing rhythmically between shots. This technique ensures that the signal from your brain reaches your feet more quickly.
3. Shuffle Step: Rather than walking to the ball, shuffle. Taking many small steps is better than a few long ones. Unless the ball is far wide (in which case you should run), good footwork involves a series of shuffle steps to the ball, allowing you to adjust easily and maintain balance.
4. Stride Into the Ball: Many players mistakenly move sideways or parallel to the baseline to hit the ball. Instead, move back first to create space, then take a long stride into the ball. Step forward into the court, bending your front knee before the hit. This motion can be broken down into "Shuffle... step... hit." Your front knee acts as a shock absorber, helping you keep your balance.
5. Slide-Step Recovery: After making a play, slide-step back into position. Avoid crossing your feet or turning your back as you return to the center of the court, as this leaves you vulnerable to a ball being hit behind you. Move back with your shoulders and feet parallel to the net. If you find yourself out of position, then abandon the slide and run, placing one foot in front of the other.

By incorporating these five tips into your practice routine, you'll notice significant improvements in your footwork and overall game. Remember, mastering footwork is a journey that will help you ascend the ranks of tennis proficiency.

So, what's the difference? let's find out!

5 a side VS 11 a side

Which would you rather… getting the ball every 10 seconds at the least, or not touching the ball for minutes on end, or just not being used because you’re not liked. In Futsal you always have the ball, since there are 4 players and a keeper, you basically only have a max of three options at all times, positioning is much more flexible as well, so you get the ball all the time. 5 a side destroys 11 a side in amount of time on the ball.

Positioning

As I mentioned above, positioning in Futsal is much more flexible. What I mean by that is that you will 100% defend and attack numerous times in a game regardless of where you are playing on the pitch, even keepers attack in certain situations. As a result of the smaller pitch and having less players on it, there will be situations that a defender is out of position, so you’ll drop back and cover, there will be times that you’re defending and see a gap or a shot and go for it, it’s just so fluid, in Futsal you always need to be switched on, because if you switch off then it’s like a 4 v 3 match. Losing a player in Futsal is so much worse than losing one in Football, compare 9 v 10 to 3 v 4 (excluding keepers), obviously the percentage is very different.

Intensity

Futsal is really intense and physical, which can be said about Football as well, but due to the smaller space on the pitch you are continually battling the same 4 players. If you embarrass the same guy once or twice he won’t take that well at all and will have it out for you for the rest of the game. Since the ball is rarely in the air (due to it’s weight) the ball is played with the feet more, so expect a lot of tackles, not all of them clean (thank god there are no studs). But intensity is a great thing, it can showcase the best players and result in an awesome event for the spectators, it can also bring out the bad… but that’s still entertaining right.

Anyway, at the end of the day, is up to you to decide whether you prefer futsal or football.

For two versions of the same sport, there are a surprising number of differences between streetball and basketball! Some of the differences between streetball and basketball are as follows:

• The spaces

Streetball is often played outside, on outdoor courts under the open sky. The court sizes vary and can be much smaller than your traditional basketball court. Basketball is usually played in an enclosed area with specially designed and equipped platforms.

• The number of players

One of the key differences between streetball and basketball is the number of players. You probably don’t have a set team when you play in your backyard – you just play with whoever is there. Basketball has set teams, and you usually know who you are playing with. If you’re playing streetball in the streets, teams constantly change and you probably won’t know your team.

• The positions

Another of the key differences between streetball and basketball is that in basketball, everyone has a set position they are meant to adhere to. In streetball, there is no such thing.

• Staying Within the Lines: In singles tennis, it's imperative that the serve crosses the net and lands within the opposite service box of the opponent, marked on either side of the center mark at the service line, known as the “T.” Should the serve clip the net but still land correctly, a “let” is called, allowing the server to retry from the first serve. Even if the ball lands slightly outside the box but touches any part of the line, it remains in play. During rallies, the ball should stay within the singles court's inner sidelines. • Hitting After a Single Bounce: The rule is that once the ball has bounced twice, the point concludes. Players are also limited to a single hit per shot. If the ball is nicked and lands again on the player’s side without crossing the net, the point ends if it doesn't reach the opponent's side.
• Balls in Air: Any ball is considered in play until it bounces. Even if the opponent is far behind the baseline in the out territory, contact with the ball before it bounces means it’s still in play. Balls cannot be called out until they bounce.
• Winning by Two: In tennis, winning both games and sets requires a two-point advantage. In a tie situation where each player wins six games in a set (6-6), a tiebreak is introduced. Here, a seven-point mini-match is played, and players switch sides after each serve point and whenever the sum of points is a multiple of six. The first player to reach seven points, with at least a two-point lead, wins the set. In the last set, the tiebreak points are played first to 10, but the player still needs to win by two points.

At the conclusion of each game, serving turns alternate, and players swap court ends on every odd-numbered game. The server's score is always called first. • Transitioning to the Ad-Phase: When players attain an equal score of 40-40, also known as a deuce or 40-all, the game enters the "ad phase." Have you ever played street volleyball or tennis and had the opposing team’s player repeatedly harm the game, or you, in some subtle but glaring manner? Traditional sports all have literal guidebooks and manuals on how they should be played, not to mention professional referees present to oversee fair play conduct.

But, what happens when you play street-style sports and there’s no one there to keep everything in check? Before you abandon your game and do something else, go over these unwritten rules with your group of friends. Make sure that everyone is aware of them before the match begins so that everyone can have a great time playing, rather than be frustrated with how other people behave or misbehave toward others.

1. Don’t Get Overly Aggressive

We all get frustrated when we start losing or when we’ve been outmatched by the opposing team. That’s not an excuse to vent our frustrations on others by resorting to violence and physical confrontation. Street-style sports are often played on hard surfaces such as concrete or wooden panels which can cause serious injury to players.

Try not to tackle, kick, punch, or push anyone without rhyme or reason when playing street sports. Once the game ends, you’ll go back to being friends or acquaintances just as you were before – don’t start grudges or beef on the field.

2. Don’t Distract the Players

When you play team sports like football or volleyball, you’ll end up with more players available than are necessary on the field at any given moment. If you’re a substitute player and are waiting for your turn to play, refrain from distracting other players.

Follow the game, check your phone, stretch, or talk to other substitutes next to you. Do not however distract playing players with shouting, loud music, jump scares, questions, and other unnecessary interactions. You won’t want others to do that to you, so use common sense and be a fair player even when not playing.

3. Team Comps are Very Flexible

Contrary to traditional sports, it’s okay to substitute your friend who is tired, unfocused, or just bored while playing street sports. You don’t need to ask for special permission or wait for a specific time to swap players during a street match.

All you need to do is establish that yes, it’s okay to switch whenever someone is tired or has something else to do without having to stop the game entirely. It’s also okay to swap players between teams if you and your friends realize that one team is overpowering the other and no one is having fun.

4. Don’t Shy Away from Creative Rules or Bets

While you can always play a game of tennis or basketball for bragging rights, you can also go crazy with your ultimate reward. Are you getting hungry and would love to have a pizza after your football match?

What about going to a coffee shop later on and grabbing a round of drinks, losers paying for everyone? Setting up an interesting reward for winning the game can be just the ingredient you and your friends are missing.

5. Stop the Game in Case of Injuries

Street sports matches are not a battlefield. If someone gets injured during the match, you’re all obligated to tend to them and help them out. Again, street-style sports typically play out in “street” environments, meaning that an injury can happen in the heat of the moment.

Before you realize it, someone might end up with bloody knees, scraped elbows, or more severe injuries. Don’t prioritize the game over your friends’ well-being – you’d want them to do the same for you. If you keep things civil and focus on fair play, the injury shouldn’t happen in the first place, so consider the combined unwritten rules when playing street sports.

Many of these unwritten rules may seem like common sense, and that’s the point. Street sports are ultimately about having fun with a group of friends, engaging in some physical exercise, and destressing after a long day.

They’re not about proving a point or venting on the opposing team which will more often than not simply consist of your close friends. Keep these rules in mind when you play football, basketball, or any other street-style sport, regardless of how many players participate or where exactly you end up playing.

Don’t be afraid to remind others of these rules if they unconsciously, or repeatedly, break them to everyone’s detriment.
